Web 2.0

*The terms "new new media" and "social media" overlap with the term "web 2.0"

Definition

Web 2.0 is a general term given to the user experiences of the World Wide Web during the first part of the 21st Century. Key elements that define Web 2.0 is the ability for the user to engage and interact not only with content on the web, but with other users of the web. Users are allowed to share and receive information, experiences and collaborate.

Where the original "Web 1.0" allowed only for retrieval of information, Web 2.0 is seen as a participatory medium. Consumers of information can also be seen as creators of information.

Origin

The term "Web 2.0" is largely credited to Tim O'Reilly of O'Reilly media.
